Pence Pledges to ‘Overhaul the Uppermost Level’ of the DOJ

Former Vice President Mike Pence made a bold promise on Sunday, stating that if he is elected president in 2024, he will “clean house on the whole top floor” of the Department of Justice. Pence, who is currently seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for president, expressed his personal experience of being treated unfairly by the DOJ due to what conservatives perceive as political bias.

Pence pointed out instances such as James Comey giving Hillary Clinton a pass in 2016, which he believed no other American would have received. He also highlighted the revelations that came to light during the Mueller investigation, where FBI agents were found to be falsifying documents and pushing a political agenda within the Justice Department. All of this happened while Pence was focused on rebuilding the military, cutting taxes, boosting American energy, and securing the border.

During a Fair-Side Chat at the Iowa State Fair, Pence emphasized his plan to bring integrity back to the Justice Department. He stated that if he becomes president, he will not only appoint a new attorney general and FBI director but will also clean house on the entire top floor of the department. Pence aims to have individuals respected on both sides of the aisle, ensuring that the rule of law is applied equally to every American.

The appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the federal investigation into Hunter Biden by Attorney General Merrick Garland drew criticism from Republicans, who viewed it as a cover-up. Pence expressed his lack of confidence in the special counsel’s probe and put more faith in the investigation led by House Republicans.

Pence believes that the pattern of the Justice Department’s actions during his time in the White House and afterward has undermined public confidence in equal treatment under the law. While he acknowledges the appointment of a special counsel, he also trusts that Congress will continue its work and bring forward the facts. Pence emphasized the importance of knowing whether President Biden’s family or Biden himself received financial benefits from foreign nationals during his vice presidency.

In the current GOP primary, Pence is polling in fourth place with 5.2% of the vote, trailing behind Vivek Ramaswamy at 6.1%, Ron DeSantis at 15.1%, and former President Donald Trump, who leads with 54.2% according to the RealClearPolitics national average.
