According to a recent investigation by the Wall Street Journal and academic researchers, Instagram has been found to promote a vast network of accounts dedicated to the commission and purchase of underage sex content. While Instagram’s parent company, Meta, claims to be continuously investigating ways to actively defend against such behavior, the investigation found that Instagram’s algorithms actively promote related content. Test accounts set up by researchers were directed to online communities promoting child sexual abuse and flooded with suggestions that led to traders and sellers of such content. Experts have warned that Meta needs to take concrete action to combat this issue, such as reinvesting in human investigators, as its algorithms appear to work against this effort by suggesting workarounds for blocked hashtags. Meta has reportedly taken down 27 pedophile networks over the last two years but must step things up to properly address this “horrific crime.”
