FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — On Tuesday, the New England Patriots made a move by trading veteran kicker Nick Folk to the Tennessee Titans.
Although the terms of the trade have not been disclosed, a source revealed that the Patriots received a 2025 seventh-round draft pick in return.
At the age of 39, Folk is heading into his 16th NFL season. He currently holds the 23rd spot on the all-time list with 353 career field goals and is ranked fifth among active kickers.
The Patriots’ decision to select Chad Ryland, a strong-legged kicker from Maryland, in the fourth round of the 2023 draft indicated that Folk’s time with the team was drawing to a close. The Patriots opted for the younger alternative who can also handle kickoffs, a role that Folk only assumed in emergency situations.
Titans coach Mike Vrabel referred to the team’s kicking position as a “fluid situation” on Monday following the waiver of Michael Badgley. After waiving a pair of undrafted kickers who competed throughout the offseason, the Titans gave Badgley a chance in their preseason finale but decided to release him on Sunday.
Folk had been a reliable presence for the New England Patriots since joining as an injury replacement for Stephen Gostkowski in October 2019. This opportunity helped revive Folk’s NFL career after being out of the league in 2018. He showcased his recovery from a left knee injury in 2017 while playing for the Arizona Hotshots in the Alliance of American Football.
During his three-plus seasons in New England, Folk had an impressive 89.2% success rate, converting 108 out of 121 field goals. At one point, he even set a franchise record by making 36 consecutive field goals.
Although Folk’s range wasn’t as deep as Ryland’s during training camp, he displayed more consistency in the practices observed by reporters.
Throughout his NFL career, Folk has played for the Dallas Cowboys (2007-2009), New York Jets (2010-2016), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2017), and the Patriots (2019-2022).
