Pasadena Implementing Strict Measures to Enforce Fireworks Regulations

Pasadena residents were reminded on Wednesday that fireworks are strictly prohibited in the city. Authorities have announced their intention to enforce all relevant ordinances during the July 4 holiday, particularly cracking down on illegal parking near the Rose Bowl.

“Despite the pandemic crisis, the danger posed by fireworks and the risk of injury still exist,” said city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

Derderian further explained, “According to the municipal code of Pasadena, property owners and tenants can be held accountable for allowing the possession, sale, usage, or discharge of fireworks on their premises. Offenders can be prosecuted for fireworks-related offenses and required to cover the costs associated with the safe disposal of confiscated fireworks.”

A press conference was held on Wednesday morning at the Rose Bowl, where city officials gathered. The stadium is set to host an LA Galaxy-LAFC soccer match on July 4 at 7 p.m., which is expected to draw a crowd of 80,000 fans.

“We want to emphasize that if you do not have tickets, it is best to stay away from the area,” warned Derderian. “Only those with tickets will be allowed to park in the vicinity, and strict parking enforcement measures will be in place around the stadium. Parking enforcement officers will ensure that any vehicles illegally parked in Pasadena’s hillside areas on July 4th will be impounded.”

Individuals found violating the city ordinance or any state law regarding fireworks may face arrest, vehicle impoundment, up to one year in county jail, and fines of up to $50,000.

“Statistics clearly demonstrate that fireworks are among the most hazardous consumer products,” explained Derderian. “Even seemingly harmless handheld sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to severe burns or fires.”

Derderian also cited data from the National Fire Protection Association, which shows that the majority of fireworks-related injuries are caused by “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena.

“To mitigate the risk of fire hazards and injuries, the Pasadena police and fire personnel will actively patrol the city to identify illegal firework activity. Police officers will seize fireworks in order to protect the public,” she added.
