Parental-Rights and LGBTQ-Support Groups Clash in Rival Rallies in Downtown LA

In a show of support for parental rights and notification policies in schools, approximately 200 individuals marched through downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday. However, a separate group gathered nearby, advocating for LGBTQ+ youth, which ultimately resulted in an unlawful assembly declaration and the arrest of at least two individuals.

The parental-rights march was organized through a social media campaign with the Instagram handle Leave Our Kids Alone. This group opposes the “indoctrination,” “sexualization,” or “grooming” of children in schools and supports policies implemented by some Inland Empire school districts that require parental notification if their children identify as transgender or express a gender different from their assigned sex at birth.

The Leave Our Kids Alone group gathered outside Los Angeles City Hall before proceeding to the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters at Third Street and Beaudry Avenue. At the latter location, some march participants sat in the intersection.

Meanwhile, members of a smaller counter protest, some waving Pride flags, assembled nearby. As a result, law enforcement officials established skirmish lines to maintain separation between the two groups. According to reports from the scene, the police attempted to push back the counter-protesters, but two individuals resisted arrest and were subsequently taken into custody.

An officer at the scene informed KTLA5 that some individuals in the crowd engaged in physical altercations with the police, and objects were thrown at law enforcement, leading to the arrests.

Although the police declared an unlawful assembly, as of early Tuesday afternoon, they had not forcibly cleared the streets or made additional arrests. However, additional units were called to the scene. The counter-protest group was pushed away from the intersection by the police, but they remained in the vicinity along Beaudry Avenue.

Opponents of parental-notification policies argue that such requirements can jeopardize the safety of LGBTQ+ students if their families do not accept their gender identity.

Organizers of the counter-rally, including Ground Game LA and Queer Nation Los Angeles, accused the parental-rights group of attempting to spread “hate” at Los Angeles City Hall and promoting a “hate-filled, fascist agenda of fear.”

Within the Leave Our Kids Alone group, individuals waved American flags, held signs with slogans like “Parental Rights Matter” and “Parental rights are non-negotiable,” and wore shirts saying “Leave our kids alone.” One person even displayed a sign stating, “Teach the Bible, not porn.”

Earlier this month, State Attorney General Rob Bonta announced an investigation into whether the Chino Valley Unified School District had violated the civil rights of students by implementing a parental-notification law. He also criticized the recent approval of a similar requirement by the Murrieta Valley School Board in Riverside County, referring to it as a “forced outing policy.”
