Panda Express Customers Possibly Exposed to Hepatitis A, Officials Warn

Health officials are collaborating with a Panda Express located in Lancaster to inform consumers about a potential exposure to hepatitis A, according to officials’ statement on Saturday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has found a food handler working at 44411 Valley Central Way location to be infected with hepatitis A virus, as per the department’s report.

No additional cases have been detected at this time.

The health department recommends that individuals who consumed food or drinks from that specific Panda Express between July 21 and Aug. 4, excluding those who have already completed the hepatitis A vaccine series or have a known past infection, get vaccinated for hepatitis A.

Local pharmacies or physicians’ offices may have hepatitis A vaccinations available. Furthermore, the county health department will be providing free vaccinations for those who were exposed at Antelope Valley Health Center, located at 335 E. Ave. K. The vaccination services will be available from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. It is highly contagious and can be transmitted person-to-person through the fecal-oral route (when contaminated feces from an infected person are ingested by another person during close personal contact) or by consuming contaminated food or water.

Most adults with acute hepatitis A will exhibit symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). The severity of symptoms can vary from mild to severe.

While timely vaccination is likely to prevent infection, individuals may still become infected if they receive the vaccination too late.
