The Los Angeles City Council reconvenes after a three-week summer break on Tuesday. One of the agenda items is to officially certify Imelda Padilla’s win in the special election for the Sixth District. Padilla was appointed as a temporary voting member on July 5 until the election results were validated by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office. She took the oath of office with her family present, expressing her readiness to represent the Sixth District and advocate on their behalf.
Imelda Padilla, a 35-year-old community relations manager, will serve the remaining term of former Council President Nury Martinez, which concludes in December 2024. Martinez resigned in October following the revelation of racist comments she made during a secretly recorded meeting posted online. The Sixth District comprises Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and parts of North Hills and North Hollywood.
In addition to certifying the election results, the agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting includes the consideration of a $3 million budget for projects in Boyle Heights, Mission Hills, Panorama City, North Hills, and Southeast Los Angeles. These projects were approved by the communities through the REPAIR Zone Program, which aims to empower historically marginalized communities in deciding how $8.5 million should be allocated for programs and services. The council plans to allocate the remaining $5.5 million in the near future.
Furthermore, committee meetings will resume on Tuesday, with the Planning and Land Use Management Committee convening in the afternoon. The committee will discuss a proposal to activate the Restaurant Beverage Program in District 14, which would streamline the permitting process for restaurants seeking to serve alcohol. Additionally, they will review a motion to establish a Coastal Development Permit that enables outdoor dining in the city’s coastal zones. The committee members will also receive a report on the status of homes affected by the 2021 LAPD fireworks explosion in South Los Angeles.
Later this week, the Housing and Homelessness Committee will evaluate a spending plan for Measure ULA funds. Given the Tuesday deadline for renters to repay back rent for the first 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the council will consider additional funding for tenant protection programs and services.
