Oversight Committee Takes Aim at Buttigieg for Troubling Travel Safety Lapses

The House Oversight Committee is launching an investigation into the “series of aviation and rail safety failures” that occurred under Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s leadership.

The committee, led by its Republican majority, expressed concern over these failures and their impact on the safety of Americans. They have requested a briefing, relevant documents, and communications regarding the Department’s efforts to address these issues and ensure the safety of all Americans.

Committee Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, specifically mentioned nine train derailments involving hazardous materials between November 2022 and June 2023 as part of their investigation.

This letter also addressed nine aviation incidents, including near-collisions and accidents at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama and San Antonio International Airport. These incidents resulted in the deaths of ground crew members. The committee highlighted data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and DOT Federal Railroad Administration, indicating 1,730 runway incursions and approximately 2,000 rail incidents, including 1,310 derailments and 146 collisions reported nationwide in 2022.

The lawmakers are urging Buttigieg and his Transportation officials to disclose information on all incidents causing death, injury, or financial damage, including related communications with President Biden’s White House.
