Over 75 Police Officers Engage in Shootout in Pittsburgh

A shootout with a man in Pittsburgh who allegedly fired on officers serving an eviction notice has resulted in at least 75 police officers being placed on leave. The man died from a gunshot wound following a 6.5-hour standoff, during which hundreds, if not thousands, of bullets were fired. The incident took place in the Garfield neighborhood, near a daycare that had to be evacuated. According to NBC News, the evacuated couple who live across the street from the residence said their home was riddled with bullets. WTAE reports that police mentioned there were easily thousands of rounds fired in the neighborhood. Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus revealed that there was a lot of ammunition in the suspect’s house, and additional ammunition was requested by the officers at the scene.

Fortunately, no officers were injured by gunfire, but a sergeant with the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office sustained a minor non-gunfire related injury. Numerous agencies, including state police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, were involved in the incident. The outlet reports that a total of 75 officers from three local agencies are on administrative leave because they fired their weapons: 47 Pittsburgh police officers, a dozen Allegheny County police officers, and 16 Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies. According to Mike Manko, a representative from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, the deputies will undergo a psychological evaluation before they can return to work.

The shootout was made public by Pittsburgh Public Safety around 11am on Wednesday. According to WTAE, a follow-up post described the situation as “extremely active” with shots continuing to be fired. The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office explained that the incident began when officers attempted to serve an eviction notice and were met with gunfire from the suspect. The suspect fired at officers from different areas of the residence, including the first and second floors and through walls. Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto revealed that the suspect managed to bring down three police drones. Chief Scirotto credited the coordinated effort of multiple agencies for saving many lives. It remains uncertain whether the suspect shot himself or was killed by the police. The suspect has been identified as William Hardison, who was residing in a home recently sold by his father. According to WPXI, Hardison had concerns about gentrification. (Read more Pittsburgh stories.)
