When Dave joined his local cricket club in Dublin back in 2015, his main goal was to regain his fitness. After undergoing major back surgery, he had been inactive for a long time. Little did he know that he would not only find a cricket buddy but also his best friend, Naveen.
Naveen, originally from India but with previous experience studying in Ireland, had recently moved to Dublin to start his own vegetarian street food business. Looking to meet new people in the city, he joined the cricket club and that’s where he and Dave were introduced. They immediately hit it off and their connection went beyond the cricket field.
While their shared love for cricket brought them together, it was their mutual passion for food that truly solidified their bond. Naveen’s exceptional cooking skills and their joint exploration of different eateries became a regular part of their friendship. They also enjoyed frequenting various pubs, especially during the colder, lonelier winter months in Ireland.
Dave describes their friendship as one filled with laughter and meaningful conversations. They provided each other with support during difficult times, such as when Dave lost his job and struggled with his mental health. Naveen understood his pain as he was also facing challenges with his business. Their ability to openly discuss serious issues made them reliable sources of strength for one another.
The COVID-19 pandemic further tested their friendship, but they remained by each other’s side. When Dave couldn’t spend Christmas with his family due to lockdown restrictions, Naveen created a special vegan Christmas dinner for them to enjoy together. The memory of Naveen wearing a jumper that played Jingle Bells still brings a smile to Dave’s face.
Unbeknownst to Naveen, Dave was battling an addiction to painkillers that stemmed from his previous back surgery. It wasn’t until Dave made the difficult decision to return to his hometown in Lancashire for recovery that he confided in Naveen. Despite his initial disappointment about Dave leaving Dublin, Naveen supported him throughout the process, even seeing him off at the airport.
Even though they are physically apart now, their bond remains strong. They continue to communicate regularly, finding solace and laughter in their conversations. Dave commends Naveen for his generosity and describes him as the kindest person he has ever met.
Naveen, on the other hand, eagerly awaits the day he can visit Dave in England, counting down the moments until he obtains his Irish passport. Their friendship has proven to be a source of support, laughter, and trust throughout their individual struggles.
