July 11 (UPI) — A venue in Portland, Oregon, is making an ambitious attempt to set a new Guinness World Record by hosting a non-stop 48-hour drag show.
The Drag-a-thon began at 4 p.m. on Monday at Darcelle XV Showplace and is scheduled to continue until 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The event aims to break the Guinness World Record and act as a resistance against drag show bans that are happening in other parts of the country.
“Drag-a-thon was organized to directly respond to the negative actions against the drag and transgender community in other areas of the country where they are trying to restrict or minimize drag performances,” explained Poison Waters in an interview with KGW-TV. “We’re taking the opposite approach. We’re doing more, more, more drag.”
The Drag-a-thon involves more than 60 drag queens and drag kings, including Eureka O’Hara, Lala Ri, and Peppermint, who are all veterans of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Various celebrities like Busy Philipps, Cheryl Strayed, Fred Armisen, and Carrie Brownstein are also set to make appearances.
This event, co-hosted by the Portland fashion boutique Wildfang, is aiming to raise $250,000 for the Trevor Project, a non-profit organization that supports LGBTQ+ youth.
