Covid-19 tests are now available for free order from the US government.
Starting today, individuals can order up to four tests per household through Covidtests.gov. For those without internet access, test requests can be made by calling 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489).
Covid-19 rapid tests, which can be taken at home, are now permitted for use regardless of symptoms. These tests will remain effective until the end of the year. While some test expiration dates may appear expired, the US Food and Drug Administration has granted extensions. Learn more.
Previously, the US government has distributed over 755 million free Covid-19 tests to individuals who requested them. The program was temporarily suspended in May. Currently, Covid hospitalizations are on the rise in the United States, with weekly admissions now more than triple the rates from two months ago.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend testing for individuals experiencing any Covid-19-like symptoms, such as a sore throat, runny nose, loss of smell or taste, or fever. Individuals may also choose to test prior to attending large events like concerts or conferences, especially if they are not fully vaccinated.
It is also advised that individuals test at least five days after close contact with a Covid-19-positive person, even if they are asymptomatic. In the event of a negative test result, a follow-up test should be conducted 48 hours later. Find out more.
