Orange County Register: Mexican authorities caution Baja California about the perils posed by Hurricane Hilary

Mexico City issued a warning to Baja California about the potential life-threatening rain and floods that could result from Hurricane Hilary. Both state and federal authorities urged residents to take precautionary measures ahead of the storm, which was expected to make landfall on Sunday. Despite some weakening, officials stressed that Hilary remained destructive. Over 6,500 soldiers were deployed to Baja California and Baja California Sur to assist with setting up shelters, organizing food banks, and preparing for potential emergency rescues. Meteorologist Libia González stated that the storm would gradually decrease in strength, but it would still be a hurricane and cause strong winds and high swells. Local residents, although largely heeding the warnings, expressed some skepticism due to the region historically experiencing mild storms that were initially forecasted to be catastrophic. Ahead of the storm, revelers in Ensenada tried to enjoy the overcast day, while organizers postponed the final events of the annual grape harvest festival and tourists were advised to leave. The national meteorological service predicted heavy rainfall across the Baja California peninsula and other northern states with the potential for flash flooding, strong winds, and life-threatening surf. The island of Cedros and San Quintín were of particular concern. Residents of Cedros expressed confidence in their tight-knit community, but faced concerns about potential food shortages. Rain had already begun, and preparations such as stocking up on supplies and securing windows had been made. Drizzle and power outages were reported in various parts of Baja California, and an alert was issued for a landslide blocking a major highway. Despite the storm’s impending arrival, couples in Tijuana gathered to exchange wedding vows, believing hurricanes do not impact the region severely.
