Orange County Register: Luxury Mexican Resort Where Newport Beach Couple Found Dead Declares Their Innocence

An official from the prestigious Rancho Pescadero hotel, a Hyatt establishment where a couple from Newport Beach tragically died in their room, has denied any responsibility for their deaths. In a statement aired on Good Morning America (GMA), Henar Gil, the general manager, stated that they do not believe the hotel’s infrastructure, such as carbon monoxide or any other gas, played a role in the cause of death.

Abby Lutz, 28, and John Heathco, 41, were discovered deceased in their room on Tuesday night. Initially, Mexican authorities suspected a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. However, GMA reported on Friday that an autopsy revealed the cause of death to be “intoxication” from an unidentified substance.

Following the tragic incident, GMA interviewed a paramedic who responded to the scene and mentioned feeling ill while inside the room. Fernando Valencia stated that both he and his partner experienced dizziness and promptly exited the room.

According to prosecutors, the couple had been deceased for approximately 10 hours when they were found, and there were no signs of violence on their bodies. The Rancho Pescadero is a 30-acre, oceanfront resort in Baja California Sur, known for its wellness offerings. The hotel’s nightly room rates start at around $600.

John Heathco was the founder of LES Labs, a Covina-based nutritional supplements company. Abby Lutz, on the other hand, resided in Ladera Ranch and worked as a nanny, as indicated by her Facebook page.

The U.S. State Department is monitoring the case, and a GoFundMe page has been created for Lutz to assist with transportation and funeral costs. The page, organized by Gabrielle Slate on behalf of Raymond Anthony Lutz, explained that during a trip to Mexico, Abby and her boyfriend initially believed they had food poisoning. They sought treatment at a hospital but were later informed of their passing due to improper venting of the resort, potentially resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning.

The GoFundMe page aims to bring Abby back home, so her family can give her the funeral she deserves. It describes Abby as a beautiful soul who will be deeply missed by her loved ones.
