Orange County Register initiates safety investigation following Tesla drivers’ reports of steering control loss.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a new investigation into safety concerns surrounding Tesla vehicles in the United States. This time, the focus is on the 2023 Models 3 and Y electric vehicles, with the NHTSA receiving twelve complaints regarding loss of steering control or power steering.

The investigation encompasses approximately 280,000 vehicles, and among the complaints received, five drivers highlighted their inability to steer the vehicles at all, while seven others experienced a loss of power steering that necessitated more effort in steering. Although one crash was reported, there were no instances of injuries.

According to a document published on the NHTSA’s website on Tuesday, drivers may receive messages indicating a reduction or disablement of power steering assist when encountering a loss of steering control. The investigation will delve into the frequency and severity of these issues, as well as scrutinize the manufacturing processes involved.

This marks the sixth probe initiated by the NHTSA into Tesla vehicles over the past three years. Previous investigations have focused on incidents involving Teslas colliding with parked emergency vehicles while operating on the Autopilot system, spontaneous emergency braking, suspension failures, detachable steering wheels, and improperly connected front seat belts.

Despite these developments, Tesla has not yet provided any comments on the matter.
