Orange County Register: Guatemalan President Urges Power Transition to Corruption Fighter Arévalo

By SONIA PÉREZ D. AND MEGAN JANETSKY

The Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei, has called for a democratic transition of power to Bernardo Arévalo and his Seed Movement party, despite facing numerous legal attacks aimed at blocking his rise to power. President Giammattei made this statement following a night of political chaos after one of the most tumultuous elections in recent history in Guatemala.

Prior to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal certifying Arévalo’s victory in this month’s presidential election, the electoral registry suspended his party from all political activities. In response, the Seed Movement has requested that the suspension be lifted. Arévalo, in a press conference, declared the suspension illegal and asserted that no one can stop him from assuming office on January 14th. However, Arévalo and his party have faced numerous legal challenges, allegations of irregularities, and even assassination plots.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has congratulated Arévalo on his election as the next president of Guatemala. In a statement, Blinken expressed concern over attempts to undermine the country’s democracy and pledged support for those seeking transparency and accountability.

Arévalo’s victory in the presidential election was undeniable, as he easily defeated his conservative opponent, Sandra Torres, with 60.9% of the votes. Despite accusations of voter fraud by Torres, President Giammattei stated that there were no significant incidents during the voting process.

However, the suspension of the Seed Movement raises questions about the party’s ability to take their seats in Congress and highlights the challenges Arévalo faces in implementing his progressive and anti-corruption agenda.

The Seed Movement has requested the nullification of the suspension, citing a previous ruling by Guatemala’s constitutional court that political forces cannot be suspended during an electoral period. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal will ultimately decide on the matter.

Experts state that Arévalo’s opponents will continue to hinder his administration’s progress, creating obstacles to effective governance. The existing establishment has already made significant efforts to overturn the election results, but the risk of international concern and social unrest may prevent further attempts.

Arévalo’s opponent, Sandra Torres, has yet to concede defeat and has alleged voter fraud. The raids on her party’s headquarters by prosecutors have drawn criticism from the international community and raised concerns for Arévalo’s safety, resulting in a request for protection from the Organization of American States’ human rights commission.

Despite the challenges, Arévalo’s victory sparked widespread celebration in Guatemala City, with thousands taking to the streets to show their support. Protesters continue to demand respect for the vote, waving Guatemalan flags outside the Attorney General’s Office.

In conclusion, Arévalo’s path to the presidency has been met with legal battles and opposition from the establishment, but his victory remains firm. The upcoming transition of power will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.
