Donald Trump, notorious for his self-proclaimed superiority, possesses a unique talent for bestowing merciless humiliation upon others. Just ask Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, who is currently experiencing the full force of his scorn.
As the overseer of the Republican primary debates, including the upcoming event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, McDaniel finds herself abandoned by Trump once again. Ignoring her pleas and bypassing her wishes, he has made alternative arrangements, just like he did in August when he snubbed the first Republican primary debate in Milwaukee.
But that’s not all. Trump has taken it a step further by actively competing with McDaniel’s debate through counterprogramming. This echoes his actions from last month when he scheduled an interview with Tucker Carlson to coincide with the Republican primary debate, stealing the spotlight from the participating candidates.
However, this time, Trump has upped the ante. He is staging a prime-time speech to United Auto Workers members, deliberately choosing McDaniel’s home state of Michigan as the location. Michigan holds historical significance for McDaniel’s family, as her grandfather George Romney was once governor, and her uncle Mitt Romney grew up there. The Romney name carries weight in Michigan, which is why McDaniel went by Ronna Romney McDaniel until Trump’s disdain for Mitt Romney tainted its value.
In other words, Trump is trampling all over Romney territory, and the Republican Party’s humiliation couldn’t be more evident. Traditional courtesies and loyalty have been discarded in the Trump era, and everyone’s fate is tied to the whims of the orange overlord.
Once upon a time, being the chair of the Republican Party was prestigious, and McDaniel’s lengthy tenure in the role would have been a testament to her political skill and influence. Now, it only labels her as a subservient follower and tarnishes her reputation.
Don’t just take my word for it, listen to Uncle Mitt. In a forthcoming book excerpt published by The Atlantic, Romney criticized Republican officials, and while he didn’t explicitly mention his niece, his remarks undoubtedly encompassed McDaniel.
McDaniel has earned this condemnation. After the 2020 election, she not only wavered on Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud but also actively promoted his falsehoods. Under McDaniel’s watch, the R.N.C. spread countless lies, including Sidney Powell’s claim that Trump won in a landslide when he actually lost by over six million votes nationally.
Her allegiance to Trump persisted since he handpicked her as R.N.C. chair after his 2016 election victory. Two Politico headlines encapsulate this relationship perfectly:
From January 2019: “R.N.C. Chair McDaniel Sides With Trump Over Uncle Mitt Romney.”
From February 2020: “Ronna McDaniel Stands With Trump After Uncle Mitt Says He’ll Vote to Convict.”
Her loyalty has garnered her nothing but ridicule. She is now a laughingstock, learning the hard way that Trump shows no mercy to his allies. His favors are not granted based on past service but on present usefulness.
So, when you sell your soul to Trump, don’t expect a receipt.
