A long-awaited museum, a vital American story

When exploring the charming historic houses of Charleston, S.C., it’s easy to forget that this prosperous port city has a dark past. Edward Ball, a historian and the author of “Slaves in the Family,” reminds us that Charleston was where nearly half of the enslaved Africans brought to America were first sold.

Last month, Ball attended the dedication ceremony for Charleston’s new International African American Museum, which he eloquently describes in an op-ed. The museum, conceived more than two decades ago, tells the story of Black American history from its roots. Ball writes, “Beneath the museum lies the muddy bank where tens of thousands of Africans first set foot on American soil, half-dead, terrified, and starving. It is a sacred place for Black America.” The museum not only celebrates African American history but also showcases cultural contributions throughout the years.

Ball notes that the opening of the museum comes at a time when many states are trying to suppress the teaching of racial history. However, he sees the International African American Museum as a breakthrough in the ongoing history wars. It represents the reclaiming of new territory for marginalized voices. Based on Ball’s description, the museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in American history and social justice.
