Opinion | Mike Pence voices strong disapproval of Trump’s actions

When former vice president Mike Pence stepped onto the Des Moines Register’s soapbox at the Iowa State Fair, he faced both hostility and gratitude from the audience. While some people accused him of treason and mocked his career, others thanked him for standing on principle during the events of January 6th. Nathaniel Gavronsky, one of those who expressed gratitude, explained that Pence had upheld the Constitution by refusing to overturn the electoral votes that made Joe Biden president, even in the face of threats from rioters. However, Gavronsky also made it clear that he would not be voting for Pence in the upcoming Republican caucuses.

Pence finds himself in a unique position as a candidate. While he remains loyal to former President Trump, he has become a key witness in the Justice Department’s case against Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Additionally, his campaign has struggled to gain traction, despite occasional moments of affirmation from supporters. Social media exacerbates the situation by magnifying criticism of Pence as a traitor, although there are also instances of support that go unnoticed.

Pence recognizes the need to remind voters of his role on January 6th and has become more direct in his criticism of Trump. He has even started selling T-shirts that reference Trump’s berating of Pence for being too honest. However, Pence believes that voters will ultimately be focused on the future, not the events of that day. This presents a conundrum for Pence as he seeks to differentiate himself from the field of Republican candidates, many of whom are distancing themselves from Trump.

Pence does have some distinct positions that set him apart from others, including his support for Ukraine and opposition to isolationism on the right. He also emphasizes the need to address the nation’s long-term debt problem through controlling spending on Social Security and Medicare. On the issue of abortion, he advocates for nationwide restrictions rather than leaving it up to individual states. All of these positions align with his conservative idol, Ronald Reagan.

Despite his alignment with Trump during his vice presidency, Pence recognizes the need for civility in public life and a return to treating one another with respect. However, it remains unclear why Pence is running given the challenges he faces. Pence believes he is the most qualified candidate to restore the mainstream conservative agenda and make America strong, prosperous, and free.

In conclusion, Pence’s candidacy is marked by both challenges and opportunities. While he faces criticism and struggles to gain support, he remains dedicated to his conservative principles and believes he can bring the country back to a stronger, more prosperous future. Only time will tell if voters will be receptive to his message.
