Exploring the World Through Edith’s Lens

What do you get when you mix cooking ramen noodles with the delicate balance of Earth’s ecosystems? They both unravel when heated. Edith Pritchett, a talented British cartoonist, cleverly captures these connections in her recent Venn diagram comics.

I had the pleasure of discovering Edith’s work in the Guardian’s Saturday magazine during my trip to London. Her unique perspective on space tourism and defrosting frozen goods adds an exciting twist to the unknown. But you don’t have to travel far to appreciate her talent. Edith regularly shares her thought-provoking and topical cartoons with Post Opinions.

One of her recent comics delves into the “Rat Girl Summer” trend. Although an explanation is best sought in the Style section, Edith provides alternative scenarios such as “Washed-Up-Dead-Jellyfish Girl Summer” and “Wood Louse Boy Summer.” She also draws inspiration from our obsession with screens, crafting whimsical dating app features for those lacking game, creative safeguards for Meta’s platforms, and tips on navigating dinner dates with augmented-reality goggles.

While psychology researcher Susan Linn argues for zero screen time for babies in an op-ed today, fearing the impact on their executive function and self-regulation skills, where’s the fun in being fully adjusted to the world? If not screens, cartoons can offer an entertaining alternative for children. Edith’s father, Matt Pritchett, a cartoonist for the Telegraph, has undoubtedly influenced Edith’s artistic journey.

Even when exploring her family’s extraordinary artistic background, Edith manages to capture relatable moments. From a 2022 cartoon in the Guardian, she humorously reminds herself to be cautious while slicing Comté cheese by the fridge door—a familiar experience for those of us who have visited our parents.

Another writer, Kate Cohen, recently attended Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, showcasing new theater works. She was delighted to see the festival bustling with people. However, Kate expresses concerns about theater attendance not reaching pre-pandemic levels. Surprisingly, she also worries about dwindling church attendance, drawing parallels between the two experiences. Both theater and church provide people with a sense of participatory transcendence and shared purpose.

Regardless of your personal preferences, Kate urges everyone to reconnect with their communities, whether in churches, theaters, bowling alleys, or any other gathering place, before these institutions disappear forever.

In other news, novelist and playwright Monica Byrne argues that the professional nonprofit model is harming regional theater. Byrne suggests that direct funding for artists could save the industry. Paul Waldman delves into the GOP’s fascination with the least qualified candidates. Catherine Rampell notes the surprising unity of political parties against free trade, cautioning it may be a trap. Jen Rubin analyzes the legal argument that state secretaries of state could exclude Donald Trump from the presidential ballot using the 14th Amendment.

Finally, the Editorial Board celebrates gymnast Simone Biles as she wins her eighth national title after prioritizing her mental health. It’s an incredible feat that truly sticks the landing.

Before we conclude, we have a special treat: a goodbye haiku known as the Bye-Ku.

“Cut back on your phone
By even just 10 percent”
New screen-tithe guidelines
