Opinion | Examining Tommy Tuberville’s Denial of White Nationalism

Surely, both Trump and Ramaswamy would vehemently deny any racial connotations in their comments. They would argue that to suggest otherwise is nothing but another form of racism. However, in this convoluted mix of meanings, the term “white nationalist” is often misconstrued as synonymous with being a white patriot. This misconception then allows any hint of racism to be unfairly directed towards white nationalists without any valid reason. According to this line of thinking, racism can only be classified as blatant and overt hatred. By engaging in these wordplay exercises, they are trying to distance themselves from open racists while still passively endorsing an intolerant racial hierarchy and a distorted view of the historical contributions of different races to humanity, as well as the revered legacy of this country’s founding fathers.

However, this artificial distinction cannot be sustained. It hinges on tortured logic and will ultimately lead to absurdity.

Just last week, Ryan Walters, the superintendent of public schools in Oklahoma, was asked about the challenge of teaching students about the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 without violating the state’s ban on critical race theory. In response, Walters stated:

“You can still pass judgment on the actions of individuals. Certainly, from a historical perspective, you should. You can analyze and differentiate between right and wrong, understand the reasons behind their actions. However, suggesting that these actions were inherently driven by their race is when it becomes critical race theory. It’s implying that a person’s race defines who they are.”

Let’s be clear: The attack on and destruction of the Black community in Tulsa, known as the Greenwood District or Black Wall Street, was carried out by white racists solely because it was a Black community.

I suppose Walters relies on the word “inherent” to prop up his flimsy argument. No, white people are not inherently terrorists or racists. No group of people are inherently such. However, there have been instances where white individuals have indeed been terrorists and racists, causing immense chaos and devastation in this country. Without a doubt, there was a dark period in our nation’s history, leading up to the era of Jim Crow, where many white Americans were at the very least exposed to, if not actively involved in, racial terrorism. Can anyone deny the reality of a violent mob descending upon a prosperous Black neighborhood in Tulsa?

Racism was even preached from the pulpits of churches. Law enforcement agencies were complicit in perpetuating racial terror. Elected officials actively promoted resistance to racial equality. People shamelessly sold and mailed postcards depicting lynchings.

It is clear that these historical truths cannot be denied or obscured.
