Opinion: Examining Florida’s History Curriculum, Twitter, and Paid Family Leave of Today

Welcome to the Today’s Opinions newsletter, brought to you by yours truly while Drew takes a break! In this edition:

Contrary to Governor Ron DeSantis’ claims, slavery was not merely an unpaid internship. The recent controversy surrounding the revised African American history curriculum in Florida highlights the need for a more accurate understanding of the realities of slavery. Enslaved individuals did not willingly develop skills for their personal benefit; they were forced into labor, treated as property, and denied autonomy. It is crucial that we acknowledge the true nature of race-based chattel slavery and the enduring impact it had on countless African Americans, including the ancestors of prominent figures such as Gene Robinson.

The push for a revised curriculum also brings up the importance of teaching the contributions made by both Black and White Americans in the fight against slavery. Instead of downplaying the horrors of slavery, conservatives should embrace the history of sacrifice and bravery shown by hundreds of thousands of White Americans who fought to abolish it. The story of the American abolitionist movement should be shared with children so that they can appreciate the humanity and unity that can arise in the face of injustice.

On a different note, columnist Catherine Rampell raises an interesting question about Governor DeSantis’ recent anti-trans Bud Light boycott. Is he intentionally damaging the parent company’s value, potentially affecting the Florida pension fund? It’s an intriguing angle to explore.

In the world of social media, Elon Musk’s decision to rebrand Twitter as “X” has been met with widespread criticism. Many believe it to be a foolish move, likening it to HBO Max’s rebranding to the plain and uninteresting “Max.” The loss of Twitter’s iconic blue bird logo is also seen as a blow to the platform’s charm and lightheartedness. However, columnist Jen Rubin suggests that Twitter’s failure under Musk’s leadership is a testament to capitalism’s ability to correct itself.

Shifting gears, the increase in paid parental leave in the United States, while still lagging behind other countries, is a step in the right direction. The presence of mothers in the U.S. women’s national soccer team, who have successfully balanced their professional careers and motherhood, sends a powerful message to other industries. It proves that supporting working parents is not only possible but also beneficial. Let’s celebrate these remarkable women and their child-free teammates as they compete in the Women’s World Cup.

Small towns have long been associated with close-mindedness and conformity, which is why many individuals, like columnist Brian Broome, feel the need to escape. Brian shares his personal experience of growing up in a small town in northern Ohio, feeling different, and yearning for new opportunities. While not all small towns are the same, his story, along with Jason Aldean’s song “Try That in a Small Town,” underlines the allure of big cities where people can embrace their uniqueness and seek diverse experiences.

Other notable stories in this edition include Michele Norris reflecting on the unfinished business of desegregation in the U.S. military, Leana Wen discussing the importance of a newly approved vaccine for RSV in older adults, the Editorial Board giving advice to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Megan McArdle suggesting the exploration of drug legalization as a response to rising overdose deaths, and of course, The Bye-Ku bidding us farewell in its concise and poetic manner.
