Numerous innocent individuals have paid a heavy price due to the escalating drug problem in cities and towns. The reduction in the number of police officers patrolling our streets and the closure of stations over the years have contributed to a perception that lawlessness is reigning free.
Many find it puzzling that a police force like An Garda Síochána, with a proud history of facing down terrorist threats aimed at destabilizing the state for 30 years, has not been able to bring these criminals under control. Individuals living alone in rural areas, as well as those residing in towns and cities, have the right to feel protected.
Talk may be cheap, but action is what truly demonstrates a government’s priorities. It is time for the police to step up and intervene, but they must be given the necessary resources and full support to do what is required. In the long term, law and order cannot solely be achieved through armed presence or force. It requires the participation of society as a whole.
However, for now, the most effective approach to address the mounting anxiety felt by many is to administer genuine justice to those who have become accustomed to feeling untouchable.
Those who inflict cold fear and harm must now experience it themselves. Any misguided sense of invulnerability must be shattered by the certainty that overwhelming forces will be unleashed upon them if they cross the line again.
