Opinion Column: The Growing Importance of Threading

Elon Musk’s recent actions have caused quite a stir. After restricting the number of tweets users could view on his platform, he now faces competition from Meta’s new text-based platform, Threads. Surprisingly, Threads has already amassed over 70 million sign-ups, attracting users across different age groups. Even my Aunt, who is in her late 60s, wanted to support the platform and teach Elon a lesson with her account. It’s interesting to discuss Meta, Threads’ parent company, in the context of an internet hero. In recent years, Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram, has faced backlash for its platforms’ contribution to false news, political polarization, and the promotion of harmful content. Leaked internal documents in 2021, dubbed The Facebook Papers, revealed how early employee concerns about problematic algorithms were ignored. The documents also exposed a review process that allowed high-profile users to bypass community standards. However, Threads’ current user-friendly interface and positive culture seem to divert attention from these issues. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that disagreement and incivility can still occur on any social media platform. Meta must prove that it can responsibly handle the power it holds in shaping public discourse as it expands its online empire. Threads follows a similar content regulation approach as Instagram, implementing precautionary measures against users posting false information. Questionable posts are censored and flagged as containing false information. Additionally, Meta has established an independent oversight board to address content moderation concerns, aiming to strike a balance between free speech and safety. While the impact of this board remains to be seen, critics have praised some of its decisions and recommendations as a step in the right direction. Meta should also consider how Threads presents an opportunity to support local journalism. As Canada passes the Online News Act, compelling social media companies to compensate publishers for sharing their content, Meta and Google have chosen to remove Canadian news from their platforms. But Threads could strengthen Meta’s relationship with news organizations by offering features that foster collaboration and a symbiotic relationship. This would demonstrate Meta’s commitment to journalism, integrity, and elevate Threads as a reliable source of up-to-date news. The future evolution of Threads is uncertain, but there is cautious optimism about its friendly environment for conversations. The growing power and influence of Meta raise questions about how it will shape both the online and offline world. For now, I’ll enjoy the ad-free and vitriol-free threads while they last.
