Opinion | Capture the Smug Mug of That Thug!

If justice prevailed, Donald Trump would embody the Mug Shot of Dorian Gray. Similar to Oscar Wilde’s unforgettable character, Trump’s picture should reflect the decay of his soul rather than his confrontational face. It would expose his cynical and immoral nature, as he willingly undermines our democracy and erodes faith in our institutions, all to avoid the label of a “loser.”

Imagine the lucrative merchandise Trump could create with such a macabre image. He could slap his rotting mug shot on a mug and sell it on his campaign website, enticing supporters with a price tag of just $25. After all, Trump has always believed that squinting or scowling presents him in a flattering light. He even modeled his squint after the legendary Clint Eastwood, whom he considers the greatest movie star of all time. When posing for his official White House portrait, Trump scowled into the camera, comparing his appearance to that of Churchill.

Thursday night showcased a performative display by Trump, arriving in his private jet and commanding a giant motorcade, reminiscent of a two-tiered justice system. Law enforcement cleared the streets of Atlanta, as if heralding Caesar’s triumphant entrance. In an interview with Newsmax, Trump claimed he had never heard the term “mug shot” until his own was taken, but his statement only highlights his pathological lying tendencies, as every American is familiar with the concept.

Following his arrest, Trump complained about his “terrible experience” at the Fulton County Jail, a notorious institution referenced in songs by rappers who have been incarcerated there. Mockingly, he mentioned that this wasn’t his first encounter with the booking process, despite never anticipating such an ordeal after attending the prestigious Wharton School of Finance. However, one would think that Wharton should include lessons on mug shots, along with ethical conduct, which Trump seems to lack.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, Trump wallowed in his self-pity, expressing discomfort over the mug shot taken by Georgia officials. It must have been quite a sight, watching him perfect his rebellious mug-shot look in front of a mirror while surrending to authority. In a classic case of projection, Trump accused his prosecutors of “election interference” while facing charges for election interference himself. Nonetheless, deep down, even someone as feral and cunning as Trump must have felt a pang of fear as he realized his liberty was at risk. This realization led him to hire a reputable criminal lawyer.

Despite everything, Trump’s devoted followers continue to adore him. President Biden sarcastically referred to Trump as a “handsome guy,” but many on the right found his jailhouse portrait thrilling. On the Republican debate stage, no one seemed courageous enough to challenge him. Nikki Haley appeared the most appealing, while Ron DeSantis’s inability to smile only added to his disqualification. It was truly pathetic that the best response Florida Governor could muster about Mike Pence’s actions during the election certification was, “I got no beef with him.”

Notably, Vivek Ramaswamy’s smarminess and Scott Jennings’ comparison of him to Scrappy-Doo, with Trump as Scooby-Doo, are unfair to the fictional characters. Unlike Trump and his mini-me, Scooby and Scrappy are positive forces in the world, always involved in unmasking crooks.

On Friday afternoon, Trump capitalized on his brief stint in jail by using it as a fundraising pitch. He described the violent and dilapidated conditions of the prison, revealing his fear. He made sure to mention that seven inmates had died in that jail this year alone, engaging his supporters and stoking their fears.

As Audrey Hepburn’s character in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” once said after tangling with the law, “There are certain shades of limelight that can wreck a girl’s complexion.” In Trump’s case, the limelight reveals the true extent of his corruption and immorality.
