Reportedly, OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive are in advanced discussions to create an “iPhone of artificial intelligence” in collaboration with Japanese investment firm SoftBank, which has committed $1 billion to the venture.
The tech-centric news site The Information reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the mastermind behind the AI bot ChatGPT, has been in talks with Ive and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son about a potential partnership.
Ive, the renowned British designer responsible for iconic Apple products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, left Apple in 2019 to establish LoveFrom, his independent design company.
The Financial Times reported on SoftBank’s significant involvement in the project.
According to sources, OpenAI and LoveFrom have been exploring possibilities for “new hardware for the age of AI.”
The Post reached out to OpenAI, SoftBank, and Ive for comments.
OpenAI, the company behind the highly popular chatbot ChatGPT, has been in talks with potential investors about selling shares in the company at a valuation between $80 billion and $90 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
SoftBank, a major player in artificial intelligence with a substantial $11 billion funding from Microsoft, is among the potential investors.
The Journal reported that SoftBank expects to generate $1 billion in revenue this year and several billion more in the following year.
OpenAI’s remarkable success has sparked an AI arms race among Silicon Valley giants such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft. Microsoft, in particular, is working on its own conversational AI technology separate from OpenAI.
In January, Microsoft made an investment in OpenAI when the company was valued just below $30 billion.
In 2015, OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit research lab in San Francisco, with involvement from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018 following a power struggle, has expressed criticism over the company’s financial ties to Microsoft.
Musk claimed that OpenAI’s chatbot had a liberal bias and announced plans to develop an alternative AI that aims to seek maximum truth and understand the nature of the universe.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI announced a major update for ChatGPT that will allow it to engage in voice conversations with users and interact using images.
The voice feature is expected to enable various creative and accessibility-focused applications, according to the company.
