Only Two Candidates Refuse to Pledge Support for Trump

During the first GOP debate, the Fox News moderators posed a question about Donald Trump. They asked the candidates on stage if they would support him as the nominee even if he were convicted of a crime. Politico reports that out of the eight candidates, only Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson chose not to raise their hands. However, there was some debate and tension surrounding this topic.

  • Vivek Ramaswamy: In defense of Trump, Ramaswamy claimed that he was the best president of the 21st century and criticized Christie’s campaign, suggesting it was based on vengeance and grievance against Trump.
  • Chris Christie: Christie voiced his concerns about Trump’s conduct, stating that it was beneath the dignity of the presidency. He received some backlash from the crowd, but stood by his statement, asserting that booing doesn’t change the truth. He also called for an end to the normalization of such behavior exhibited by Trump.
  • Asa Hutchinson: While Hutchinson couldn’t pledge his support for Trump, he cited Republican National Committee rules as the reason. These rules would prohibit backing Trump if he were to be convicted. Hutchinson also mentioned that some conservative scholars believe Trump is already disqualified from running again. The crowd reacted negatively to Hutchinson’s response.
  • Pardon? Ramaswamy urged Mike Pence to pledge to pardon Trump on his first day in office, as he would. However, Pence only committed to giving fair consideration to any pardon requests if he were to become president.
