All models of Onewheel electric skateboards are being recalled following reports of four deaths and numerous serious injuries between 2019 and 2021.
In response to the recall, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has instructed users to immediately cease using these self-balancing skateboards. The reason for their recall lies in the potential for the boards to stop balancing the rider if their limits are exceeded, posing a crash hazard that can result in severe injury or even death.
The deaths were a result of head trauma, and it’s worth noting that three of the victims were not wearing helmets at the time. The injuries associated with these skateboards include traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, body fractures, and ligament damage.
When the Consumer Product Safety Commission initially warned customers to stop using the skateboards in November, Future Motion, the manufacturer headquartered in Santa Cruz, declined to take immediate action. However, they have now chosen to cooperate with the recall and are implementing a firmware update to address the safety concerns.
The firmware update, available in a few weeks time, specifically targets the Onewheel GT, Pint X, Pint, and XR models, excluding the original Onewheel and Onewheel+ skateboards.
Both Future Motion and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission strongly advise riders to wear appropriate safety equipment. CNN has reached out to Future Motion for comment.
