On this day one year ago (August 5, 2022), a former convict suspected of sexually assaulting a woman while she was walking her dogs in Torrance is scheduled to appear in court.
The accused, Darrell Dean Waters, aged 46, is charged with attacking and sexually assaulting the woman around 1 a.m. on Sunday in the 4300 block of Emerald Street, north of Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, according to Sergeant Mark Ponegalek of the Torrance Police Department.
The events leading up to the assault are unclear, although the Torrance police mentioned that the woman fought back but was severely injured before the suspect fled the scene.
Waters was formally charged on Wednesday with one count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual penetration by use of force, stated the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The charges also include allegations that Waters caused significant bodily harm and that he had a previous robbery conviction back in 1994.
Although the police initially described him as homeless, the prosecutors referred to Waters as a resident of Los Angeles.
Waters was apprehended on Monday night by the Torrance police and has been in custody since then, according to jail records.
