A man suspected of car theft in Ventura County led authorities on a high-speed chase that spanned multiple counties and involved multiple carjackings. The pursuit ended in Ventura County where the suspect was apprehended by pursuing officers on Wednesday.
The exact timeline and starting point of the car theft spree are unclear. However, at around 11 a.m., two Los Angeles Police Department officers pursuing the suspect were injured in a traffic crash on Riverside Drive. The suspect managed to escape the scene.
Later in the afternoon, the suspect was spotted driving a white minivan at high speeds through the San Fernando Valley and on the Ronald Reagan Freeway. Displaying reckless driving skills, the suspect narrowly avoided collisions with other vehicles. Eventually, an officer successfully deployed a spike strip that disabled one tire on the suspect’s van. The suspect then carjacked a white BMW sedan at a gas station in Porter Ranch and continued the chase.
Shortly before 2 p.m., with the BMW also showing signs of damage, the suspect pulled into another gas station in Woodland Hills and stole another white minivan.
The suspect continued to flee west on the Ronald Reagan Freeway, reaching speeds over 100 mph. However, he was eventually surrounded by three police cruisers on the Moorpark Freeway. In a failed attempt to escape, the suspect struck one of the cruisers while driving in reverse. Realizing he had no way out, the suspect surrendered.
Aside from the injured officers in Toluca Lake, there were no immediate reports of other injuries during the crime spree.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed at this time.
