Olivia Rodrigo Teams Up with Tate McRae and Iris Apatow in ‘Bad Idea Right?’ Music Video

The music video for Olivia Rodrigo’s latest single, “Bad Idea Right?” directed by Petra Collins, portrays Rodrigo’s willingness to do anything to see an ex-lover.

This guitar-heavy single, produced by Dan Nigro, showcases Rodrigo’s sassy lyrics about her desire to see a former flame, despite knowing it may not be the best decision.

In the first verse, Rodrigo sings, “Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months, but I’m out right now and I’m all messed up. And you’re calling my phone and you’re all alone. And I’m sensing some undertone.” The energetic chorus repeats the line, “Seeing you tonight — it’s a bad idea, right?”

The nostalgic video, reminiscent of the ’90s, begins at a house party where Rodrigo and her real-life best friends are gathered in the bathroom. Despite the warnings from random attendees that it’s a “bad idea,” Rodrigo ignores them all, telling herself, “Fuck it, it’s fine.” She then embarks on a journey to her ex’s place, hitchhiking in the rain and getting splashed by a slushie on public transit until she finally arrives.

The single and its music video were simultaneously released on Thursday night, which followed Rodrigo’s social media teasers. Fans got a first look at the music video and flirty cover art, featuring a fuzzy photo of the popstar posing behind glass with the song’s pensive title written across it in red lipstick with kiss marks.

“Bad Idea Right?” serves as the second single and music video from Rodrigo’s upcoming sophomore album, “Guts,” set to be released on September 8 via Geffen Records. Her previous single, “Vampire,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Rodrigo the youngest artist to debut three No. 1 hits on the chart, following “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.”

“Guts” is the follow-up to Rodrigo’s 2021 debut, “Sour,” and like its predecessor, the 12-song set will be produced by Dan Nigro. “Guts” is described as a project that tackles the “growing pains” Rodrigo has experienced since rising to stardom with her breakout track, “Drivers License.”

In an interview with Variety in August 2021, Rodrigo discussed her openness about her emotions in her music.

“On ‘Sour,’ I definitely talked about my deepest, darkest secrets and insecurities, which is sort of strange to share with the world. But it’s really empowering when it comes out, and it’s been amazing to see people resonate with that vulnerability and relate to it,” Rodrigo said.
