Ohio voters support abortion protections while Kentucky re-elects Democrat

The Virginia election did not go well for Governor Glenn Youngkin and Republicans in the state. Not only did they fail to take control of the state Senate, but they also lost the House of Delegates. This means Youngkin will have to face a Democratic-controlled legislature for the next two years, making it difficult for any abortion-restricting legislation to move forward. Republicans also faced losses in key races in Mississippi.

Additionally, the daughter of the late conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Meg Bryce, lost her school board race in Virginia. Democrats and Glenn Youngkin’s team were quiet as the wins for the Democratic party rolled in.

In Kentucky, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie suggested that Daniel Cameron’s loss was due to his close ties with Donald Trump. This echoes the results of four crucial Senate races in which Trump-endorsed candidates lost. And in Houston, the mayoral race is headed to a runoff between Democratic candidates John Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee.

Virginia made history by electing its first openly transgender state senator, Danica Roem. In New York City, Yusef Salaam, an exonerated member of the Central Park Five, won a seat on the City Council. Democrats also made gains in New Jersey, flipping multiple assembly seats.

In Mississippi, voters had issues at the polls, causing Democratic nominee Brandon Presley to extend their watch party. Republican nominee Tate Reeves’ supporters also gathered to await the results.

Meanwhile, NBC News projects that Ohio voters have passed a measure to legalize recreational marijuana, with support from liberals, young voters, and other key demographic groups.

Finally, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed a message of unity in his victory speech, emphasizing his commitment to serving all of Kentucky’s people. He outlined plans for the state, focusing on economic growth and opportunities for the future.
