A police officer critically wounded a 38-year-old man who was suspected of shooting into a house in Cathedral City. The incident took place on Friday at the 27100 block of Shadowcrest Drive, near Verona Road and Avenida Quintana, around 2:40 p.m. The Cathedral City Police Department received a report about shots being fired from a woman who said she heard four gunshots before a windowpane on her glass door shattered.
Upon investigation, it was determined that Benjamin Scott Cohen, a 38-year-old resident of Cathedral City, was the suspect. While officers were still present at the scene, Cohen approached one of the officers in his vehicle and was subsequently shot. Cohen was immediately transported to Desert Regional Medical Center by Cathedral City Fire Department paramedics. He is currently in critical but stable condition.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Force Investigation Detail is assisting the CCPD in investigating the shooting and the injuries sustained by Cohen. Additionally, the Cathedral City Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an administrative investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. The officer involved in the shooting, an experienced law enforcement veteran with seven years of service, will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
