A police officer from the Whittier Police Department and the suspect accused of shooting him are receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries on Tuesday.
The exchange of gunfire took place on Pickering Avenue, near Penn Street, at 8:40 p.m. on Monday. The Whittier Police Department officers were conducting surveillance and had stopped a vehicle being driven by Edgar Gonzalez, who is the alleged gunman in a fatal shooting on Sunday in Santa Fe Springs. Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department provided this information.
The officers repeatedly asked the suspect to exit the vehicle. At some point, Gonzalez got out and fled, with the officers in pursuit.
The police caught up to Gonzalez between two apartment complexes and opened fire on him. He continued running south on Pickering and discarded a semi-automatic handgun. He then headed west on Mar Vista Avenue from Pickering, as stated by the police.
A K-9 unit was deployed and officers utilized a less lethal 40mm round on Gonzalez before apprehending him, according to Reynaga.
The injured officer and Gonzalez were taken to Los Angeles General Medical Center. The officer sustained gunshot wounds to his lower extremities, while the suspect suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, officials reported.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, is reportedly in good spirits. Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatieri mentioned in a Facebook post that he commended the “awesome response” from the personnel of the Pico Rivera, Norwalk, and Temple Sheriff’s Stations, as well as the El Monte and Irwindale Police Departments.
The Whittier Police Department is being assisted by Sheriff’s homicide detectives in the investigation of the shooting.
