Obituary: Richard J. Whalen, Noted Biographer of Joseph P. Kennedy, Passes Away at 87

Richard J. Whalen, a prolific writer known for his best-selling biography of Joseph P. Kennedy, passed away at the age of 87 in Yorktown Heights, NY. Whalen began his career at Fortune magazine, where he wrote a profile on Kennedy that eventually turned into a book. He received a $100,000 advance to write “The Founding Father: The Story of Joseph P. Kennedy,” which spent 28 weeks on The New York Times best-seller list. Whalen later left Fortune to work at a policy research think tank and caught the attention of Richard M. Nixon, who asked him to be an adviser and speechwriter during his presidential campaign. However, Whalen left the campaign shortly after Nixon’s nomination and wrote a critical book about him. Whalen’s other political work included serving as a consultant and writer for Nixon’s secretary of state, William P. Rogers, and as a personal adviser to Ronald Reagan. Beyond his political work, Whalen started his own company and worked as a lobbyist for various clients. He is survived by his wife, daughter, sons, grandchildren, and brother.
