Obituary: Henry Kamm, Noted New York Times Journalist and Pulitzer Prize Winner, Passes Away at 98

Henry Kamm, a former Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign correspondent for The New York Times, passed away at the age of 98 in Paris. Known for his coverage of Cold War diplomacy, famine in Africa, and wars in Southeast Asia, Kamm was a skilled writer with a deep understanding of global affairs. His experience as a refugee during World War II influenced his career, as he always showed a keen interest in marginalized groups and those without a voice.

One of Kamm’s notable achievements was his Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting on the plight of Southeast Asian refugees in 1977. These refugees faced tremendous hardships, including dangerous sea voyages and rejection from various countries. Kamm’s interviews with these refugees shed light on their experiences and eventually led to the United States and other nations offering assistance.

Kamm also wrote two books about Asia, including “Dragon Ascending: Vietnam and the Vietnamese” and “Cambodia: Report From a Stricken Land.” These books provided comprehensive insights into the history and struggles of these nations.

Born in Germany in 1925, Kamm and his mother escaped Nazi persecution and arrived in the United States in 1941. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and later attended New York University. Kamm joined The New York Times as a copy boy and gradually advanced to become a foreign correspondent based in Paris. Throughout his career, he reported on significant events, such as the Prague Spring and the Soviet Union under Communist rule.

After retiring in 1996, Kamm resided in France and later acquired German citizenship in 2018. His extensive archive of papers, including thousands of articles, is preserved by the New York Public Library.
