NPR unveils Pepper X, the world’s hottest pepper that packs three times more spice than its predecessor

A Pepper X pepper, discovered in Fort Mill, S.C., has recently gained the title of the world’s hottest chili pepper, as recognized by Guinness World Records. For the grand announcement, Ed Currie, the founder of PuckerButt Pepper Company in South Carolina, showcased Pepper X on the popular YouTube show, Hot Ones, where he received the prestigious Guinness award. The Scoville Scale, which was developed in 1912 to measure the spiciness of peppers, was used by Guinness officials to determine Pepper X’s intensity. Capable of producing an average of 2.693 million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs), Pepper X far surpasses the heat level of a jalapeño (2,000 to 8,000 SHUs) or a serrano (10,000 to 23,000 SHUs). Remarkably, Pepper X is three times hotter than its predecessor, the Carolina Reaper, which Currie also developed. However, unlike the Carolina Reaper, Pepper X delivers an intense burn immediately upon consumption, with subsequent effects on the head, arms, and chest. Despite lacking the throat burn commonly associated with the Carolina Reaper, it does cause pain to set in later. Interestingly, although the seeds of a pepper are usually perceived as the heat source, Pepper X’s potency is primarily concentrated in the white placenta within the pepper. Guinness notes that the bumpy texture of Pepper X provides more room for the placenta to grow. After perfecting the stability of Pepper X a decade ago, Currie and his team decided now was the ideal time for its release, as no one had been able to surpass his previous record with the Carolina Reaper.
