Notable Puppeteer Sid Krofft Urgently Requests Fast-Track Trial in Lawsuit Against Brother Marty

Television creator and puppeteer Sid Krofft, at 94 years old, is seeking an expedited trial for his lawsuit against his brother, Marty Krofft, and related Krofft entities. The lawsuit claims that they have been late in paying nearly $500,000 owed as part of a buyout of Sid Krofft’s business interests. According to court papers filed by Sid Krofft’s attorneys, the allegations include breach of contract, negligence, financial elder abuse, and unjust enrichment. In a recent motion, Sid Krofft’s lawyers requested a trial within 120 days of the scheduled Sept. 1 hearing.

One important factor to note is that Sid Krofft is currently battling melanoma, which has required surgery and immunotherapy treatments for the past year. These treatments have left him with chronic pain and various side effects, including fever, headaches, chills, fatigue, loss of taste, dry mouth, and difficulty eating. Additionally, Sid Krofft suffers from atrial fibrillation, putting him at risk for blood clots, strokes, and heart failure.

In his lawsuit filed on Jan. 30, Sid Krofft is seeking at least $470,000 in compensatory damages, punitive damages, a declaration of the rights of the parties, and a court order allowing him to inspect corporate records of all funds received since May 2017.

On the other hand, defense attorneys deny any liability on the part of their clients and argue that the complaint lacks specific allegations against them. They claim that the defense lawyers should be dismissed with prejudice.

Sid Krofft and his brother Marty Krofft, both born in Montreal, are well-known for creating numerous children’s television and variety show programs, particularly in the 1970s. Some of their notable works include “H.R. Pufnstuf,” “Land of the Lost,” and “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.”

According to court papers, Sid Krofft has always been frugal and still lives in the same home he moved into in 1974. However, his brother Marty Krofft has been living extravagantly, and Sid Krofft has loaned him hundreds of thousands of dollars upon request. This generosity eventually led to Sid Krofft having to ask his brother to cover his living expenses, which he found humiliating.

The court papers mention that Marty Krofft’s behavior became aggressive and irrational, which strained their personal and financial relationship. In May 2017, both parties agreed that Marty Krofft and the Krofft companies would buy out Sid Krofft’s shares in the entities and maintain a zero balance. As part of the agreement, Sid Krofft was supposed to receive a car and $10,000 per month for life starting in July 2017. However, the payments ceased in February 2019, leading Sid Krofft to believe that Marty Krofft has been deceiving him about the solvency of the Krofft entities while promising to pay him the money owed.

Overall, Sid Krofft is seeking a resolution to the payment dispute through an expedited trial, considering his age and health challenges.
