Not all autistic people benefit from smartphones | Autism

I respectfully disagree with the viewpoint expressed by the correspondent in the letter dated 3 August. The suggestion that a ban on mobile phones in schools would have a negative impact on students with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is unfounded. It is important to note that individuals with ASD are already vulnerable to isolation and excessive reliance on technology as a solution to their needs.

As an individual with ASD myself, I have noticed that contemporary society often favors technological solutions to address any challenges I may face. However, it is crucial to emphasize that having ASD does not imply a preference to avoid human interaction. Instead, I believe that the overreliance on technology further segregates individuals with ASD from the neurotypical world.

Today’s world is increasingly overwhelming and noisy, which significantly contributes to my anxiety levels. I do not consider drowning out unwanted noise with personal music or audio devices to be an effective solution. In fact, wearing headphones would only amplify my anxiety, and any unexpected physical contact or attempts to gain my attention would require substantial time to recover from. Each person with autism experiences the world uniquely, and it is essential to recognize that not all solutions are equally suitable for everyone.
