NFL Response to Legislator’s Call for Increased Federal Focus on Illegal Gambling

The NFL has responded to inquiries from a Nevada lawmaker regarding the league’s policies on gambling with a letter that includes an appeal for Congress and authorities to pay more attention to illegal activities in this area and allocate more resources to combat them.

The league sent its response to Democratic Representative Dina Titus, who co-chairs the bipartisan assembly on gambling. The letter highlights the league’s recent efforts to enhance the education of approximately 17,000 players, coaches, employees, and others regarding the NFL’s rules on gambling.

“There is no higher principle in the NFL than safeguarding the integrity of this sport,” said Jonathan Nabavi, the league’s vice president for public policy and government affairs, in the letter, which was dated Friday and obtained by The Associated Press. The league also emphasized its relationship with integrity monitoring services that help identify and address potential policy violations.

Although these efforts are directed towards the legal sports betting market, the NFL believes that “Congress and the federal government have a unique role to play in monitoring illegal operators.” The letter adds that the league has “worked to underscore the importance of federal involvement in this area.”

“We believe that legislators and authorities need additional attention and resources to address the illicit gambling market, which still holds sway,” wrote Nabavi.

In her letter dated June 15 to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Titus requested that the league outline its policies following a series of recent suspensions related to gambling.

“When players are suspended and coaches are fired, it means the system is working. But the goal should be to prevent these bets from happening in the first place,” wrote Titus.

On Friday, the lawmaker issued a statement criticizing the NFL’s response. She argued that it did not clarify the number of active investigations the NFL has conducted regarding suspicious activity in sports gambling.

“With the rise of legal sports betting, it’s more important than ever to maintain the integrity of the games for players, bettors, and sportsbooks,” the statement from Titus read. “That’s why I’m reaching out to all the leagues seeking information on their internal betting policies, including education and monitoring.

“It’s very disappointing that the NFL has refused to respond and instead jumped to illegal gambling in the sport as a whole. It makes one wonder what they’re trying to hide.”
