NFL Player, 35, Tragically Loses Life in Rip Current Mishap

Tragic news emerged on Tuesday as 35-year-old former NFL quarterback, Ryan Mallett, passed away in an apparent drowning incident off the coast of Florida. Mallett, who was working as a high school football coach in Arkansas at the time of his death, was caught in a rip current along with a group of 9 to 12 other individuals at a beach in Destin, Florida, according to sources cited by Arkansas’ Deltaplex News. Although everyone else managed to make it to safety, Mallett found himself struggling and eventually submerged. Emergency responders retrieved him from the water unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, as reported by ESPN.

Ryan Mallett, who played college football for the University of Arkansas and went on to be drafted by the New England Patriots in 2011, had also played with the Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens before retiring from his professional career in 2017, according to a report by CNN. The New England Patriots expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, stating, “The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates, and all those grieving his loss.” The University of Arkansas also paid tribute, stating, “We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Ryan Mallett. He was a Razorback legend with extraordinary talent and a larger-than-life personality. He led our program to some of our most memorable moments. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.” (Read more Florida stories.)
