NFL Adoption Row: Michael Lewis Accuses Hollywood for Encouraging Bias Identified in “Blind Side”

Michael Lewis, the author famous for “The Blind Side,” has come forward to defend the Tuohy family against allegations made by former NFL player Michael Oher. Oher filed a petition claiming that the Tuohys did not adopt him as portrayed in the book but instead deceived him into making them his conservators. Lewis refuted these claims and shifted the blame to the entertainment industry, emphasizing that the Tuohys did not profit significantly from the film adaptation. He expressed his sadness at Oher’s suspicion towards the Tuohys, given the support and resources they provided him with throughout his life.

According to Lewis, if Oher had been adopted, he would have had control over the financial aspects of the movie. However, as someone under a conservatorship, Oher relinquished control to the Tuohys. Elizabeth Psar, a Tennessee family attorney, stated that Oher could have been adopted even after turning 18, but the decision ultimately required his consent. The Tuohys defended their choice to opt for conservatorship, highlighting that they sought legal advice and involved Oher’s biological mother in the process to ensure it was done correctly.

Nevertheless, some legal professionals, such as Barbara Moss, find the arrangement between the Tuohys and Oher unusual. They believe Oher would not have met the criteria for a conservatorship, as it is typically intended for individuals with mental or physical conditions impairing decision-making abilities. Martin Singer, an attorney for the Tuohy family, vehemently denied any attempt to profit off Oher and claimed that Oher himself had threatened to go public with a negative story unless he was paid $15 million.

Although the movie adaptation of “The Blind Side” achieved tremendous success, critics have accused it of perpetuating racial stereotypes and presenting a “white savior” narrative. Oher has expressed frustration with how the movie depicted him, believing it negatively affected his NFL career.

Overall, the controversy surrounding the Tuohy-Oher relationship raises questions about the complexities of adoption and conservatorship, as well as the portrayal of real-life events in the entertainment industry.
