The GAA is contemplating a change in the scheduling of the Leinster and Munster hurling finals for next year. Presently, both events are held consecutively with the Munster championship played in Limerick, followed by the Leinster decider in Croke Park on the same day. However, GAA President Larry McCarthy has acknowledged that the present arrangement is not ideal for the governing body. It is suggested that one of the finals could be played on a Saturday night with the provinces alternating every other year. “Having the two of them on the one day is not optimal for us I think,” says McCarthy, who confirmed that the matter will be reviewed by the CCCC to introduce necessary changes for next season.
McCarthy also defended the revised structure that aims to accommodate a larger number of games within a relatively shorter schedule. “Players are enjoying it and getting a great kick out of it, and it’s a challenge for managers – they have to have more players ready to play every weekend as a consequence of the games coming thick and fast,” he stated. Although small attendance numbers have been recorded, due to the larger number of games, McCarthy stresses that having more games equates to a greater opportunity for fans and players. Overall, the GAA remains committed to their goal of achieving a high-quality tournament that accommodates all teams and players.
