Newport Beach Resident Found Deceased in Upscale Hotel Room in Baja California Sur – Orange County Register

In an unfortunate incident, a man and woman from Newport Beach have been discovered dead in their luxurious hotel room in Baja California Sur, as confirmed by local authorities and news outlets.

The tragic incident took place in El Pescadero on Tuesday. El Pescadero, situated between Todos Santos and Los Cabos, was the location of this unfortunate event.

According to ABC news and the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s office, the victims were identified as John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 28. Abby Lutz, hailing from Newport Beach, California, was confirmed to be from Newport Beach by the AG’s office. John Heathco, on the other hand, owned the business LES Labs in Newport Beach, according to various websites.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the AG’s office declared that the cause of death was “intoxication by substance to be determined.” The attorney general’s office mentioned that the couple had been deceased for approximately 10 to 11 hours before they were found. There were no signs of violence on their bodies, as reported by the AG’s office.

ABC reported a statement from a U.S. State Department spokesperson on Thursday, conveying their condolences to the families and mentioning that they were closely monitoring the local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death. The statement further expressed the readiness to provide any necessary consular assistance while respecting the families’ privacy.

Prior to this incident, an AP story suggested that the suspected cause of death was inhalation of gas. Poisoning by carbon monoxide or other gases has been a recurring issue in Mexico due to poorly vented or leaky water heaters and stoves.

This remains a developing story.
