July 21 (UPI) — After an extensive 30-hour search involving police and other authorities near Berlin, a suspected lioness is now believed to have been a wild boar, according to officials.

Berlin Police issued a warning to residents in Kleinmachnow and other southwestern suburbs on Thursday, advising them to keep children and pets indoors while they searched for a suspected female lion on the loose. However, it has now been revealed that the unclear video purporting to show the lioness wandering near some trees was misconstrued. Kleinmachnow Mayor Michael Grubert stated at a news conference that two wildlife experts had reviewed the footage and concluded that it does not depict a lioness.

Mayor Grubert also mentioned that no evidence of any animals other than wild boar was found during the search, disputing the initial claims. Rainer Altenkamp, a wildlife expert and chairman of the environmental organization NABU Berlin, supported this view, stating that the animal in the video is indeed a wild boar. He cited the animal’s tail, round back, and elongated head as consistent with a wild pig rather than a big cat.

Despite conducting an extensive search using drones, helicopters, sniffer dogs, and heat-seeking cameras, the authorities were unable to find any evidence of a lioness. Additionally, a roaring sound heard by searchers late Thursday night was later determined to be the result of teenage pranksters using a Bluetooth speaker.

As a result, the police officially called off the search on Friday. It has been confirmed by environmental officials in Brandenburg that there are currently no lions unaccounted for in the state, as all 23 registered lions have been located.
