New Sony PlayStation Console Set for Release Later This Year Leaked by Microsoft

PlayStation Rumors: Court Documents Suggest a New Console and Handheld Device in the Works

According to recently leaked court documents, Sony is reportedly preparing to launch a new PlayStation 5 Slim console later this year, priced at $399. This information was revealed during Microsoft’s ongoing trial with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding their acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion.

Microsoft’s filings from June 22 indicate that Sony is expected to release the PlayStation 5 Slim at a reduced price point, similar to its less expensive Digital Edition priced at $399.99. However, it’s important to note that Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of a PlayStation 5 Slim model.

The leaks didn’t stop there. Microsoft went on to speculate that Sony is also gearing up to launch a handheld version of the PlayStation, codenamed ‘Project Q.’ Microsoft aimed to convince the judge overseeing the case, US District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley, that Sony’s upcoming console would further limit competition and put Microsoft in a less competitive position in the gaming market.

While regulators from various countries have approved Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the US and UK regulators have taken action to block the deal amid concerns of potential competition suppression in the video game market. The FTC has brought the case to a federal court to prevent Microsoft from closing the deal before a trial begins on August 2.

Documents from the case have surfaced online, indicating that Microsoft may have inadvertently revealed Sony’s plans for the PlayStation 5 Slim before they were officially announced. Microsoft’s intention was to demonstrate that the Nintendo Switch competes in the same markets as Xbox and PlayStation, but Sony’s upcoming console would further diminish Microsoft’s competitiveness, placing them in third place.

In addition to the PlayStation 5 Slim rumors, it has also been rumored that Sony will release a handheld version of the PlayStation 5 for under $300. This information aligns with previous speculation about a handheld device called ‘Project Q’ that surfaced in May. Sony has confirmed that ‘Project Q’ is indeed a dedicated device set to launch later this year. It will allow users to play compatible games installed on their PS5 consoles using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. The device features an 8-inch LCD screen capable of delivering crisp visuals and smooth gameplay, with all the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.

Considering Sony’s previous release of a slimmer model for the PlayStation 4, the rumors of a slimmer PlayStation 5 model are not unwarranted. As of now, Sony has yet to officially comment on these rumors.
