New Mexico Governor’s Message to Republicans: Express Gratitude Amidst Tensions Over Democrat’s Far-reaching Gun Order

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has called out state Republicans for using her controversial gun order as a fundraising opportunity. The order, which temporarily bans the open and concealed carry of firearms in Albuquerque, has sparked backlash from both the GOP and gun rights groups. Lujan Grisham took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express her frustration, stating, “I’m still waiting on a thank-you note from the New Mexico GOP. Way to use my call to action around gun violence as a fundraiser instead of using it as an opportunity for immediate action to save New Mexican lives.”

After Grisham’s order was announced, the state Republican party began sending out fundraising solicitations tied to opposition against the ban in Albuquerque. The National Rifle Association (NRA) also filed a lawsuit in the state’s Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the order.

Randy Kozuch, the Executive Director of NRA-ILA, sent a letter exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital to Lujan Grisham, demanding that she rescind the order. The letter stated, “Please rescind your unlawful and blatantly unconstitutional orders and uphold your oath to defend the constitutional rights of those in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Until then, we’ll see you in court.”

In addition, the Republican Party of New Mexico has announced plans to file a lawsuit against the governor, accusing her of violating the rights of New Mexicans. They stated on social media, “We’re filing a lawsuit against @GovMLG and the Secretary of Health for violating the rights of New Mexicans! America is not a totalitarian nation! We will not stand for the governor’s unconstitutional actions.”

Despite the criticism, a federal judge has temporarily blocked parts of the public health order for a minimum of 30 days. Grisham justified her decision by pointing to the alarming gun violence rates in the city. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New Mexico ranked third among states with the highest firearm mortality rates in 2021, with a rate of 27.8 deaths per 100,000 people. Only Louisiana and Mississippi recorded higher rates.
