After a quarter of a century, Netflix is bidding farewell to its DVD service. Today marks the shipping of their last ever discs from their remaining distribution centers in California, Texas, Georgia, and New Jersey. Experts have deemed this as “the end of an era”. If you’re part of the majority who solely rely on Netflix’s streaming service, there’s no need to worry about this change. However, for those still waiting for their final Netflix discs, the company has stated that they can keep them as souvenirs.

This decision is one of the most significant in Netflix’s 25-year history. The DVD-by-mail service, which was once iconic, will be discontinued as Netflix continues to shrink due to the increasing popularity of online streaming. In 2019, they had 2 million DVD subscribers, which decreased to 1.5 million in the following year. Although DVD rentals only accounted for 0.4% of Netflix’s revenue last year, making $126 million, the service played a pivotal role in revolutionizing home entertainment and paving the way for streaming.

Netflix’s managing director, Ted Sarandos, expressed in a blog post titled ‘Netflix DVD – The Final Season’ that their goal has always been to offer the best service to their members. However, as the business continues to shrink, maintaining the same level of service becomes increasingly challenging. They want to end the DVD service on a high note and will ship the final discs on September 29, 2023.

Many fans have expressed their disappointment with this announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter). Some have fondly referred to the iconic red envelopes that contained DVDs as “legendary”. Others reminisced about the convenience and wider selection of movies available during the DVD rental era.

This move by Netflix is seen as the end of an era by tech experts like James Bore, who highlighted that physical media, including gaming consoles, is struggling in the face of streaming. Retailers like John Lewis have already ceased selling DVD players in their stores, emphasizing the declining demand for physical media.
