NCAA’s Inadequate Handling of Mental Health Issues Criticized by Deion Sanders Following Denial of Eligibility for Two-Time Transfer

In a recent ruling, the NCAA denied immediate eligibility to Tyler Brown, a player for the Colorado Buffaloes, which has led to Coach Deion Sanders voicing his dissatisfaction. Brown, an offensive lineman, began his college football career at Louisiana and later transferred to Jackson State to play under Sanders. Throughout his playing career, Brown has faced numerous challenges related to mental health and had hoped to be granted immediate eligibility to play at Colorado, despite being a two-time transfer.

Coach Prime expressed his disappointment with the NCAA’s decision, highlighting how it effectively isolates Brown. Sanders stated, “It doesn’t make sense. You claim to care about mental health, but when you have someone truly dealing with mental health issues, there’s a problem. By ostracizing him and not allowing him to do what he’s talented and passionate about, you’re adding to the struggles of this young man.”

Earlier this year, the NCAA voted to restrict waivers for players transferring for a second time. Under the new guidelines, athletes only receive immediate eligibility on their second transfer if it’s due to a physical or mental health reason, or “exigent circumstances.”

Brown shared a video detailing his past battles with mental health, expressing his fear of entering a dark place again without football. He mentioned that he has been taking anxiety medication and antidepressants since his teenage years. Despite his challenges, Brown excelled during his latest season under Sanders at Jackson State, earning first-team All-SWAC honors and being named a third-team All-American.

When Sanders accepted the head coaching position at Colorado, Brown chose to follow him. Sanders raised questions about the NCAA’s commitment to mental health, wondering if their care is genuine or merely convenient and profitable.

It’s worth noting that other players, such as North Carolina’s Tez Walker and Florida State’s Darrell Jackson Jr., also had their waivers denied. The upcoming season for the Buffaloes will commence with a game against TCU on September 2nd.
