The University of Michigan football team is currently under investigation by the NCAA for alleged sign-stealing, as announced by the school and the Big Ten Conference on Thursday.

Sign-stealing, the practice of gathering information about a team’s offensive and defensive play calls, is not explicitly prohibited by NCAA rules unless electronic communication is intercepted during a game. However, in-person scouting is prohibited.

According to NCAA Bylaw 11.6.1, off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents during the same season is prohibited.

Both the university and the Big Ten Conference were informed of the investigation on Wednesday, as stated in a public statement released on Thursday by the conference.

“The Big Ten Conference prioritizes the integrity of competition and will closely monitor the investigation,” the statement further emphasized.

The conference also informed Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan’s traditional rivals who are scheduled to play against the Wolverines on Saturday, and other future opponents about the investigation.

Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Wolverines, denied any illegal sign-stealing by the program and expressed full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

“I do not condone or tolerate any illegal or NCAA rule-violating activities,” Harbaugh stated. “Throughout my career, whether leading a program or organization, I have always operated within the boundaries of the rules in terms of scouting opponents.”

According to reports, the NCAA approached Michigan State University on Wednesday with what it described as “credible evidence” of sign-stealing by the Wolverines against opposing coaches this season.
